Rio de Janeiro, April 2019 – The UFRJ Science Park is open since 2003 and is located in one of the UFRJ campi, on University City Island. Today, research centers belonging to 15 big companies, 10 small and medium-sized companies, as well as 10 UFRJ laboratories are set up in the Park. The 15 large companies located in the Park invested more than R$ 900 million in the construction, establishment and operation of their research and development centers.
The Coppe/UFRJ Business Incubator, which currently holds 29 startups, is also set up here. In 2017, the resident startups had together receipts of over 9 million reais. There are also 4 other startups that participate in the CrowdRio acceleration program.
Since its opening, the Park’s investments have reached over R$ 1 billion. The sum was applied in the structuring and development of the Park, creating a powerful ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship. That includes infrastructure, creation of shared spaces, establishment of research centers, urbanism and integration spaces between the academic and business universes and networking increase. Currently, about 1,500 people work in the Park.
Within a 350,000 square meter area, are installed the research centers of companies such as Schlumberger, FMC Technologies, Tenaris, Baker Hughes, Halliburton, Dell EMC, Senai Cetiqt, Siemens, Vallourec and BR Asfaltos.
Up to the present, the companies located in the UFRJ Science Park have signed 413 contracts with laboratories, schools and faculty members of the University, and 280 million reais were invested in these partnerships.
On average, annually, the medium and big companies of the Park produce two new patent requests — result of proven innovative action developed.
The mission of the UFRJ Science Park is to create a cooperation environment between the entrepreneurial initiative and the academic community, besides incentivize the creation of innovative companies in Rio de Janeiro. The Park also intends to attract new activities of research, development and production of innovative goods and services to the University City Island.
Reference in innovation, the UFRJ Science Park has already received 3800 national and international visitors. This search — by representatives of other learning institutions, city, state and federal governments, chiefs of state, international missions, consulates and embassies, besides many actors in the Brazilian and international innovation environment — reflects the relevance of the Park in its field.
