On February 20 and 21, the UFRJ Science Park hosted the Rio 2018 Atlantic Interactions workshop. The event presented the Atlantic International Research Center (AIR Center) which aims at promoting the generation of knowledge about climate change and other issues related to the Atlantic Ocean by connecting deep sea technologies to space technologies through global cooperation. Manuel Heitor, the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education of Portugal, participated in the event to strengthen the scientific and technological cooperation between Portugal and Brazil. The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the State of Rio de Janeiro are given priority in that cooperation. On the second day of the event, Paulo Ferrão, the president of the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) in Portugal, and Ricardo Vieiralves de Castro, the president of the Foundation for Research Support of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Faperj), signed a protocol for financing the exchange of researchers in Rio de Janeiro and Portugal. This initiative corresponds to the first step towards the setting up of the Atlantic International Research Center (AIR Center) in the state of Rio de Janeiro. During the event, topics were debated such as the development and integration of space and oceanic technologies, data science, the creation of the AIR Center Data Intelligent Network, strategies for new knowledge business in the context of Atlantic interactions, and public policies for the cooperation between the USA and Brazil.
